Train Your Brain: Cognitive Hacks for The Online Learner

When studying online there are many challenges to be faced. Loosing motivation, focus and memory are some examples.

According to cognitive psychology, we naturally lose attention over time. Therefore, when a person studies for a long period of time without a pause, there is a breaking point in his attention span. He/she starts to give attention to other things. For example, scrolling on the phone, going on YouTube and Facebook. And also, sometime it is harder to understand the theories no matter how hard you study. Which causes negative thoughts to arrive. In psychology it is said that if we reinforce something our mind starts to deviate to that set of thoughts. So, when we start thinking negative, we cannot study and remember anything.

Here are two scientifically and psychologically proven technique to study

1.The Pomodoro Technique: Effective way to study long hours

This technique is a time management method. You can study 25 minutes and take a brief 5 minutes break. This technique is very effective way to study long hours.

 ·       Effective Brief Break

If you can get brief effective break, it is very important to your studies. it should be fruitful. for example, walking around the house or on the lawn, talking to a friend or family member, listening to music and something that will relax the mind.

We can start working again after a small effective break. This will help in keeping focus and attention consistently. Do this in cycles, after working for 3 to 4 hours take long break.by using this technique we can keep the attention and focus constant and consistent making our attention span last longer.

 2. Retrieval Practice: Learn by Recalling, Not Rereading

This technique is scientifically proven to be the most effective way of studying. It involves active brain recalling. Retrieval practice is done by trying recall concepts and ideas of a certain topic without going through it first.
